Disease can affect peripheral neuromuscular system disorder at various levels starting from anterior horn cell, nerve root, peripheral nerve, neuromuscular junction and muscle itself. Group of disorders affecting muscle are called myopathies. Here is an outline of muscle diseases.
1. Dystrophic Hereditary Myopathic Disorders:
These hereditary disorders are genetically transmitted causing defects in dystrophin protein and are destructive not only for skeletal muscles but also for cardiac and smooth muscle. These include:
I. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
II. Becker Muscular Dystrophy.
III. Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy.
IV. Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy.
2. Limb-Girdle Syndromes:
This disorder primarily involves shoulder & hip girdle and proximal limb muscles.
